Removing and fitting a front wheel hub bearing (TESLA model S)
How do I change a front wheel bearing on a TESLA model S?
- 1
Place the vehicle on a lift.
- 2
Remove the front wheel.
Be careful with this type of mounting. These bearings are fitted with a magnetic encoder that is sensitive to external magnetic sources.
- 3
Remove the brake caliper, then hang it up.
- 4
Loosen the brake disc retaining bolt and remove the brake disc.
- 5
Install the inertia extractor on the wheel hub.
- 6
Loosen and remove the 4 bolts securing the bearing to the knuckle.
- 7
Extract the bearing using the slide hammer
Over time, the steel bearing and aluminum knuckle remain stuck together due to galvanic corrosion. Using the inertia extractor allows the bearing to be removed without damage.
- 8
Clean the wheel bearing housing on the knuckle.
- 9
Refit the new wheel hub bearing.
Remember to check the magnetic signal on the bearing. Find out more about best practice by watching our video tutorial (link to ASB tester card).
- 10
Tighten the new wheel bearing to the correct torque.
- 11
Reinstall the brake disc.
- 12
Refit the brake calliper and tighten the bolts to the torque recommended by the manufacturer
- 13
Refit the wheel and retighten the bolts to the recommended torque.
- 14
Depress the brake pedal several times to bring the brake pads back into contact with the brake disc.
