Removing and fitting a front shock absorber
How to change the front shock absorbers correctly.
- 1
Place the vehicle on a lift.
- 2
Remove the right-hand front wheel from the vehicle.
- 3
After removing the nut, remove the lower ball joint from the pivot.
- 4
Undo the steering knuckle.
- 5
Remove the steering knuckle.
- 6
Undo the central screw on the transmission.
- 7
Undo the two links on the stabiliser bar rod.
- 8
Remove the transmission from the wheel hub.
- 9
Undo the bolt connecting the pivot to the shock absorber.
- 10
Install the CLAS strut spreader tool on the pivot.
- 11
Spread the pivot.
- 12
Remove the shock absorber pivot.
- 13
Secure the shock strut with an appropriate tool.
- 14
Remove the screws holding the filter block to the shock absorber frame.
- 15
Remove the shock absorber strut.
- 16
Install the shock absorber leg on the press.
- 17
Position the upper part on the shock absorber spring
- 18
Close the protective grilles.
- 19
Compress the shock absorber spring.
- 20
Using the tool in the damper head removal kit, remove the nut from the damper rod.
- 21
Remove the used fitrant block and stack it.
- 22
Remove the shock absorber.
- 23
Remove the new SNR shock absorber from its packaging.
- 24
Remove the SNR KB6 suspension stop kit.
- 25
Assemble the stop on the filter block, observing the angular positions.
- 26
Reinstall the bump stop and bellows. We recommend using a new bump stop and bellows.
- 27
Manually squeeze the damper rod vertically to remove the retaining tie.
It's normal for the rod to come out, as it's a gas shock absorber.
- 28
Refit the shock absorber with the rubber pad on the spring support.
- 29
Install the shock absorber on the press.
- 30
Reinstall the entire assembly (suspension stop kit, impact stop and bellows).
- 31
Reinstall the shock absorber rod nut.
- 32
Tighten the nut using the appropriate tools from the shock absorber head removal kit.
- 33
Release the shock absorber spring.
- 34
Remove the shock absorber from the press.
- 35
Refit the shock absorber on the car.
- 36
Replace the pivot on the shock absorber.
- 37
After removing the spacer tool, reinstall the screw.
- 38
Reinstall the transmission.
- 39
Reposition the suspension ball joint in the pivot.
- 40
Reposition the steering knuckle.
- 41
Reinstall the stabiliser rod. SNR recommends using a new part.
- 42
Tighten the pivot screw to the correct torque.
- 43
Tighten the central transmission screw to torque.
- 44
Tighten the steering knuckle to the correct torque.
- 45
Tighten the stabiliser linkage bolts to the correct torque.
- 46
Replace the wheel.
- 47
Tighten the wheel bolts to the correct torque.
- 48
DUPLICATE THIS PROCEDURE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE.
