Hydraulic tensioner: operation and instructions
Understand how a hydraulic tensioner works and how to avoid mishandling the tensioner (GT).
- 1
The retaining pin on a hydraulic tensioner must be removed at the end of the timing change operation, once the belt is in place.

- 2
If it is necessary to recompress the hydraulic tensioner, this operation must be carried out vertically (using a press).
- 3
Take care not to exceed a pressure of one ton.

- 4
Failure to do so will result in an air-oil mixture in the lower chamber, rendering the tensioner inoperative. Eventually, this could lead to engine timing failure.
